PuTTY is an application which is used to connect from Windows to a Linux shell account using the SSH protocol. Shell accounts allow users to access a computer remotely to enter commands into it and control it from a different location. Sometimes they are provided with web hosting accounts or for other purposes.

Here are the steps for making a basic connection:

  1. Download and install PuTTY.
  2. Place PuTTY in any folder on the computer or on the desktop. It is a standalone program and does not need to be installed.
  3. Double-click PuTTY to open it.
  4. In the field where it says 'Host Name (or IP address)', enter the server of your shell account.
  5. In the field where it says 'Port', enter 22 if it is not already entered. This is the standard default.
  6. Under 'Connection type' select SSH. From here there are two options. The first is to click the 'Open' button to connect, then enter the username and password. The second is to save this session for future use.

If you wish to save the settings, do the following:

  1. In the field where it says 'Saved Sessions', enter a name that will help you remember it in the future.
  2. Click the 'Save' button.
  3. Click the 'Open' button and enter the username and password when promoted.
