Hewlett-Packard computers with AMD processors have a problem that occurs after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3. The power management driver it installs is only compatible with Intel processors. This causes the machine to boot up, crash, reboot itself after failure, crash again and so forth. This is called a constant reboot cycle.
If you are experiencing this, here are the step-by-step instructions to boot to safe mode and disable the driver:
- Reboot your computer
- Keep tapping the 'F8' key while the computer boots up. This will take you to a list of boot options. If you get a keyboard error, reboot and try again.
- Select 'Safe Mode' and press Enter.
- Once Windows Safe Mode is loaded, click 'Start'.
- Click 'Run...'.
- Where it says "Open:" type this: regedit
- Click the 'OK' button.
- Locate this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
- Find the entry in the right pane called "Start" and right-click it once to pull down a small menu.
- Click "Modify" from the menu.
- Where it says "Value data:" change the number 1 to a 4.
- Click the 'OK' button.
- Close Registry Editor.
- Reboot.
