By default, each time a new folder is opened in XP it loads in the same window. From there, the navigation buttons would be used to move backward, forward and up. There is a way to make all folders open in separate windows. Using either one comes down to a matter of user preference.

Here are the instructions:

  1. Click 'Start'.
  2. Click 'Control Panel'.
  3. Double-click 'Folder Options'.
  4. Click the 'General' tab if it is not already selected.
  5. Under 'Browse folders' click the option that says 'Open each folder in its own window'.
  6. Click 'OK'.
